How to Kick it Off

Welcome! If you are reading this, you are likely considering or planning to lead a Book Club 4 Kids, or know someone who will.  As the leader, you commit to facilitating the meetings and helping guide the discussions to ensure a deeper understanding of the subject and content the kids are reading.  You can read alongside members; otherwise, our ToolKits (more below on this) will guide you as if you have read the book. If you want help kicking it off or leading any particular meeting, you can always book Wendy via Zoom. Lastly, anyone committed to kids’ learning and growth as individuals while building a community is equipped to lead a Book Club 4 Kids. Wendy’s Master’s Degree in Education (M.A. Ed) and experience teaching, combined with leading her own Book Clubs 4 Kids, provides you the tools to be successful in this new endeavor.  The steps in our “How to Kick It Off” will help you successfully launch your Book Club 4 Kids.

Each ToolKit you download corresponds to a specific book. Only the leader needs a copy of the ToolKit. Every ToolKit includes a summary of the book along with the following supports:

In addition to the above, Toolkits include EVERYTHING you need to guide a successful meeting with discussion prompts and additional resources to support a fun and engaging meeting.

Book Clubs 4 Kids Bake Sale FUNdraiser

A beloved warm weather childhood tradition is hosting a lemonade stand.  BC4K elevates this to a next-level experience with a bake sale, raising funds for a cause connected to a specific book.

Club members should execute all steps of the bake sale, including planning, signage/advertising, baking, sales and clean up.  Each member typically bakes 2-3 types of treats with their family.  We encourage using compostable wrapping to reduce our footprint on the planet.  All funds go toward the non-profit of your club’s choice.

Always make sure to mention “suggested donation”.  When it’s going to charity, people tend to contribute more.  Lastly, make sure to promote to all family, neighbors, friends, etc.  Adults are encouraged to advertise on social media, and collect Venmo contributions.  Venmo makes it easy to contribute funds remotely for those who can’t attend your Bake Sale FUNdraiser in person.

Examples and Inspiration can be found below:

Stella Diaz Saves the Day

Stella Diaz Saves the Day is about a girl who is passionate about marine biology.  Her concerns for the waves lead to climate education about pollution in oceans, lakes and other bodies of water.

We reside in the Pacific Northwest and have a strong family love for the endangered Orcas living in the Puget Sound. Our first Book Club Bake Sale FUNdraiser raised funds for Wild Orca which helps support our local Orca pods who continually face new challenges as a result of climate change and other human factors resulting in adverse impacts on their food supply of local salmon.

When Stars Are Scattered

This graphic novels tells the story of Omar and his brother who live in a refugee camp in Kenya. Despite all the loss and hardships they’ve endured they never stop dreaming of life beyond the camp and the education they hope will get them there.

The kids in this book love to play soccer despite not possessing a soccer ball. Instead, they play with a bundle of plastic bags. This imagery was poignant to highlight how much many of us take for granted. Our second Book Club Bake Sale FUNdraiser raised funds for iACT which aims to provide a safe place for refugees and conflict-affected children to learn soccer, lead, play, grow, and be children.
