Dusti Bowling
Age Rec: 4th-6th Grades
Themes: Friendships, Tourette Syndrome, Fitting In, Divorce, Moving & Second Chances
Any fan of Dusti Bowling’s Aven Green books will absolutely love this spin-off about Aven’s bestie, Connor. Connor and his mom move to a new town for two reasons: his mom got a new job so she no longer has to work night shifts as a nurse, and they will be closer to his dad. The second part is not a selling point for Connor. Not only does Connor have to leave his best friend behind, but he also has to navigate a new school with the added challenge of having Tourette Syndrome. Thankfully for him, on day one, a few kind-hearted kids seek him out to join their crew.
The group consists of Rory, Amanda and Keanu. They are like any other middle schoolers, except they all have unique traits that make them especially empathetic and relatable to Connor. These shared connections, combined with the characters’ big hearts, lead to instant friendships.
Connor finds he has a natural gift for drumming and quickly learns to keep the beat. His parents are thrilled he not only has adjusted well to his new school but is also finding a passion for music. As much as Connor wants to punish his dad for leaving two years ago, his dad continues to put in the work. He is trying to win back the trust of both Connor and his mom.
An important theme here is that people deserve second chances. After all, we all make mistakes. It’s how we own them and move forward that matters most.
