Lemony Snicket
Age Rec: 4th-6th Grades
Themes: Loss, Greed, Legal Loopholes, Theater, Dark Comedy, Siblings, Outsmarting Adults
If the title doesn’t give it away, this book features one unfortunate event after another. It begins with the Baudelaire children learning their parents were killed in a fire that destroyed their home. As if either of these details was not devastating enough, they are sent to live with a ‘relative’ they’ve never met: Count Olaf. The harsh reality quickly sets in that Count Olaf is neither fatherly nor kind. His sole motive for becoming their guardian is to control the Baudelaire fortune. The children exhaust their limited resources trying to save themselves. Read book 1 in this dark, yet comedic, series to enjoy the unfortunate misery the kids experience.
