Well- you know how much our family loves OREOS- how could I pass up on a book where the main character loves OREOS and obsesses about his 3/day limit?

That was what initially attracted me to this book/story but after the first page I was hooked and connected to Owen Birnbaum, the main character, his humor and ability to deal with issues of bullies and negotiating friendships and family life.

Statistically speaking: Owen Birnbaum might be fatter than the average twelve year old boy but he is also smarter. While he spends his days being teased by his classmates and tortured by his gym teacher, he finds himself trying to out-smart the new school psycho who has started stealing his oreo cookies from his lunch.

Before you judge this book to be too sad- Life isn't all bad. Something happened a few years ago and he's learning to deal with his past and current challenges with humor and relying on his family and friends. Plus he's a genius and can invent cool stuff like a new thief catching device--to help capture the Oreo snatcher and an invention that reflects the past that he hopes will help heal his heart.

IT IS SUCH A GREAT BOOK! Like Owen points out- most books start out with some kid's first day at a new school where everything is new and slightly scary.

"The thing is, when you are fatter and smarter than the national average, practically every day is like the first day at a new school."

SLOB is a great book to kick off our for Back-to-School Season!

Adam uses his quick whit to outsmart Baron von Sheepsbottom's plan to detain him in Hawaii! He is such a cheater claiming Adam was his nephew!

As you know- by the end of our reading- Adam is caught again and time is running down... Adam is soooo close! Will he make it back to his school picnic table in time??

We find out next week... but to review last week.....

Here's a picture of the traditional American baseball snack.

The traditional sailor's uniform with the back flap and neckerchief is referred to as the "Cracker Jack" uniform by the United States Navy.

So it is no wonder the other sailors called him Cracker Jack when he put on the old sailors clothes.

Adam makes a quick list of things he has missed on his trip. (p192) One of the things on top of his list was being able to

read signs and speak the language.

Here are some stop signs from around the world. It's helpful most of them are the familiar shape and color.

Another item on his list were using the toilets -- the way you would expect.

(I've never spent any real time out of the United States but here is a picture of toilets in Europe.

And this smaller picture of the l-o-n-g toilet is from Japan.

I don't want to get too far into "Potty Language"-

but I thought that very interesting.

Being able to use the bathroom is IMPORTANT and something I don't normally think about when traveling. But something I would be uncomfortable with doing without!

Adam takes time to do a good deed in Seattle. Helping a family of ducks from a drain.

Here is a popular landmark in Seattle:

The Space Needle.

Built for the 1962 World's Fair. During which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. It features an observation deck at 520 feet (160 m), and a gift shop with the rotating SkyCity restaurant at 500 feet (152 m). From the top of the Needle, one can see not only the Downtown Seattle skyline, but also the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay and surrounding islands.

And lastly: Adam gets hit with "Travelers Trots" aka: Diarrhea. I have heard that is common if you travel alot. (Another reason why knowing how to use the bathroom in another country would be so important.)

1. What would you miss if you traveled for 40 days around the world? Have you ever taken a long vacation? What did you miss? Or what were you happy to come home to?

2. Your assignment this week is do do a good deed like Adam, then return and report to us.

Just like Adam saved the ducks from the drain , I want you to look for opportunities to do something nice.

(And it doesn't have to be something BIG-- often it is the small things that matter most. Taking time to cheer up friend, reading to a younger brother or sister, setting the table without being asked. You're smart! I know you will think of something great to do!)

Adam and Meredith are really moving now! From bridges in Sweden

To a cottage in Finland.

With Stoppers on their heels... Meredith and Adam make their way to Russia! ( With the help of an old retired sailor, Shypoke Crisp.)

(Small fact: Russia is the largest country in the world in terms of area. Despite its size, much of the country lacks proper soils and climates (either too cold or too dry) for agriculture.)

(I think those Russian Buildings look so cool!- like Candy Land houses.)

Questions:

Palindromes are words that are spelled the same forward and backwards. Adam and Meredith pass time on the l-o-n-g train ride through Russia making up Palindromes.

1. What is your favorite palindrome?

2. Meredith and Adam are 180 degrees (half way around the world) from California. Adam's starting point. What country is 180 degrees away from you?

3. Predict: Will Adam regret trusting Meredith? What do you think will happen to their team: The Phileas Fogg Voyage Project?

What's Up with Saunas?
Seems a bit crazy for Adam to find himself in a Sauna with Shypoke Crisp. But Sauna's are actually very popular and here are a list of some of the reasons why people use them.

1.The warmer temperatures in Sauna's assist our bodies to rid itself of body toxins. We have 2 natural ways as humans to loose these body toxins through sleep and exercise .

2.The warmer temperatures in Sauna's force our bodies to sweat therefore cleaning our skin.

3. Some people feel Sauna's are a place to find peace and solace.

WARNING:

Don't use a Sauna without your parents permission because you're body can overheat faster and there are lots of HOT rocks and spots in saunas. (More information HERE)

Adam makes it safely to England with no scary

mishaps on the Queen Mary 2- whew!

(Double-decker bus and Big Ben are famous sites in London, England.)

Adam takes a quick side stop to stand on the prime-meridian.

FUN FACTS:
The Prime Meridian is the meridian (line of longitude) which is defined to be 0°.

The Prime Meridian and the opposite 180th meridian (at 180° longitude), which the International Date Line generally follows, form a great circle that divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

Standing on the Prime Meridian is a popular touristy thing to do- if you find yourself in Greenwich, England.

On-to FRANCE!

Some sights of Paris :

Adam visited the Arc de Triomphe
The construction of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris was ordered in 1806 by Napoleon, the French Emperor.

Napoleon wanted to honor the Grande Armee, the name of the French army at that time.

The Grande Armee had conquered most of Europe and was then considered invisible. After his Austerlitz victory in 1805, Napoleon said to his soldiers : "You will return home through archs of triumph".

The construction of Arc de Triomphe was completed in 1836, long after Napoleon's death in 1821

Notre Dame Cathedral

Notre-Dame is a Catholic cathedral built during the Middle Ages. (And one of the main tourist attractions with it's breath taking stain-glass windows.)

Eiffel Tower
History behind the Eiffel Tower: It all started with a Design Competition hosted by the French Government in the 1889. They wanted to mark the the anniversary of the French Revolution, and held a design completion for a suitable monument. From over 7 hundred submissions, the proposal by the noted bridge engineer Gustave Eiffel was chosen unanimously. It called for an entirely open-lattice iron tower 984-feet [300-meters] tall.

It was sitting at the base of this grand structure that Adam learned the hard lesson once again: TRUST NO ONE.

Kobenhavn, Denmark:

This Little Mermaid statue is one of the most famous tourist attractions. Created by Edward Eriksen in 1913 who was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale.

Winter Room by Gary Paulsen

This is a short book: only 100 pages but written at a 5:4 level.
If you like to think about what life was like 100 or more years ago on a farm, this book is great. Elton, a young farm boy, explains how farms smell and sound. (Makes me a little glad I don't live 100 years ago on a farm- reading about how a manure pile smells in spring. Manure is a fancy word for poop by the way.)
But this book was very entertaining. About two boys living on a farm with uncles, their dad and mom. Small pranks they play and the stories the uncles tell at night to pass the time.

I liked it better than
The Barn by Avi (just if anyone wants to know.)
The Barn is also a short book about farm life- except this one is really sad. It too is only about 100 pages and written at a 5th grade level.
It's about a family almost torn apart by death and the aspirations of each character to go their own way... yet through tragidy they come together to finish a project ("The building of a Barn") that in the end... strenghtens and unites them again.

World's Dumbest Crooks by Allan Zullo

I give this book 5 stars.
It is funny. This book is actually a collection of true stories, some only a few sentences long telling how sometimes crooks make dumb mistakes. It's not just about criminals but also mistakes professional sports mistakes and funny stories like the mother who thought her son had a strange bump on the back of his neck, she took him to the doctor and he removed the old wad of gum.

My favorite story is about a robber who stole money from a store- ran down the street and turned to corner to only run into 2 police men whose guns were drawn on a murder suspect lying down on the ground! Talk about bad luck! He throws his hands in the air and gives himself up- to find out - they aren't real police officers! A TV show was filming and the fake police men looked at each other wondering what to do. But the real police were there shortly to take him away- for real.

Good book if you like to just pick something up to read.

Week 2: Salt Lake City pg 37-73

So much has happened to Adam this week! He made it across the United States and has learned he is not the only 12 year old trying to travel around the world this summer!

First let's review some sights ...

Second Stop: Salt Lake City!

A big city in the valley of mountains.
You might have watched the 2002 Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake. It is known for having the best snow in the world!

( If you like to ski or snowboard.)

Sears Tower in Chicago: Adam was able to see from it's Sky deck four states!

This famous skyscraper has 110 floors and a height of 1,450 ft (442 m). It was the world's tallest building at its completion in 1974 and remained so until 1996! (It was surpassed by the Petronas Towers (1,483 ft [452 m]) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)

And in New York this is Rockefeller Center and the ice-rink

And the majestic stone lions in front of the main public library in New York!

Then a voyage on the world famous Queen Mary 2~

Week 1 : San Fransisco pg 1-36

Our adventure begins with Adam Story in San Fransisco!

One major landmark in San Fransisco is the Golden Gate Bridge!

First stop is in Reno, Nevada!

Here's a fun fact you might not know:

"Nevada is the largest gold-producing state in the nation. It is second in the world behind South Africa."

Why is Adam a loner? Why doesn't he have many friends? Post a comment in our comment box with your thoughts.

Forexample: Jay Jay says he thinks Adam is a loner because he studders and is shy. Alice reads the comment and thinks 'WHAT??? Adam doesn't studder!?!? Jay Jay you aren't even reading the book! '

Alice doesn't need to comment that. When she comments she could say, " I think Adam is a loner because....(give her reason)..... . Jay Jay what makes you think Adam studders? I didn't think that when I read chapter one."

Jay Jay can then respond and explain his comment. "There are parts in the book where he seems to stumble over his words, for example..(gives page number and example)......."

Sharing our different ideas and comments are what make book clubs fun! So you don't have to agree with everyone. Don't be afraid to share your own thoughts.

Magic Tree House Series

This series is good for the younger chapter readers, and is very good at what it's made for-teaching kids about various subjects, as they go back in time.

In other areas, it has very little depth,such as the character's personalities- they seem so generic.

But, little kids who are only looking for action and don't care very much for these small things will enjoy the plot of going back in time, to see the various settings, such as ancient japan or the period of the dinosaurs.

In the later magic tree house books, they begin to go to fantasy areas instead of the past, which effectively takes away the educational aspect- probably more interesting for children, but it takes away one of the hooks that draws parents towards the series, too. All in all, if you have a child who's reluctant and enjoys action and a fast pace, this book is for them- with an educational feel, too.

Legend of Red Horse Cavern by Gary Paulsen

ONLY 55 pages but packed with action- mystery- murder!
5 Stars!

Summary from the back of the book: "Deep in the damp, dark caverns of the Sacramento Mountains, Will Little Bear Tucker and his friend Sarah Thompson discover the secret of an ancient Apache legend. But armed bandits are after them. A headless Indian brave haunts them. And when they lose their way, they may not escape the eerie underground maze alive."

I loved this book- I don't know what to say- without spoiling the suprises.. so I just used the summary from the book. (I hope that is not "cheating") The author did such a great job of making me feel like I was there with Tucker and Sarah. I would recommend this story to EVERYONE!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a series about a boy named Greg Hefley, and his struggle through middle school. Though it is more so pitched towards 5th-8th graders, my mom laughed aloud at it a tons of times. Another good thing about these books are that it has made a lot of kids who didn’t like to read read more often. It has a lot of cartoony pictures to add to the humor. One of my favorite parts is when he makes a haunted house but he runs out of time so it is really lame. If you read the first one (the red one) you can read the others in any order and it doesn't really matter. A good read, you’ll find yourself laughing aloud more times than you can count. (unless, of course, you hate laughing but who doesn’t like a good laugh?)

The Chocolate Touch

This book is about a boy who likes chocolate. He finds a coin on the ground and goes to the nearest candy store to buy chocolate. But it was no ordinary box of chocolate. It was in a big box he was disappointed when there was only once piece of candy in it. He was surprised, when he ate the chocolate it tasted sweeter then any chocolate he had ever had. What surprised him more was the next morning when he was brushing his teeth the yucky toothpaste now tasted like the sweet chocolate he ate the night before. So he ate all the toothpaste. But it doesn't stop there, now everything he eats turns to chocolate!

My favorite part was when he went back to the store owner to try and take the chocolate touch away. The owner was polishing a new coin hinting that this could happen again to someone else!

The Family Under the Bridge by Natalie Carlson

97 pages long.

I give this book 3 stars. I enjoyed reading it but it was a little sad.

This story takes place in Paris around Christmas time. A friendly hobo named Armand is a pleasant fellow- until he reaches the bridge he lives under and finds some homeless children. Armand doesn't want to share his bridge but the children quickly win him over. Their mother is less thrilled with this new friendship or living arrangement, but without a proper home and anyone to tend the children while she works, she learns to appreciate the kind heart and good nature of Armand.

I really liked the ending of the story and the message of "families" are what we make them.

Junie B Jones Series

This series, written for young girls, is extremely funny- but, it might not be for very young girls. The incredible humor might go over their head, because they can relate to the main character a little too well.

A lot of people, even middle schoolers, can appreciate these books, but they are very short with large font. I recommend it for girls 2 grade through elementary.

The series follows the adventures of a kindergardener-1st grader who gets into all sorts of trouble doing seeming normal school activities, such as pet day- she has no pet, but is determined to bring something in… even a fish stick! The series isn’t easily described by the summaries, as most of the charm lies in Junie’s point of view, and how she sees the world so differently… her unique personality makes this book a very easy recommendation to young girls.

The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes

Only 80 pages long- I really liked this story so I give it 5 stars.

This story is about a group of girls in classroom 13. All the girls are wrapped up in who has the prettiest dresses and poor Wanda wears the same tattered faded blue dress every day. When Wanda states she has 100 dresses at home- the girls can't resist asking her and mocking her daily about it- especially Peggy and Maddie.

There is a twist to the story- but in the end the girls learn the truth about Wanda's 100 dresses!

It is the type of story that makes you want to be a better person. I don't ever want to miss an opportunity to be friends with someone like Maddie and Peggy.

Interested in starting a book club?
Here are some tips to help you get started:

Compose the group:

What is the goal of your book club?
Is this a social event to help your child make friends? Is this a way to motivate a reluctant reader to read more? Is this activity a sneaky way to boost academic skills? What is your goal for hosting/organizing a book club?

Who to invite? Ask your child who they would like to invite- you might be surprised. Think of kids, in the neighborhood, classmates, but also friends from church, teammates, relatives? Brainstorm with your child all the friends (s)he knows who might enjoy a club with the goal you have in-mind. This will help you find the right mix of kids to invite.

Invite kids who have similar reading levels. Look for members with similar interests and abilities. Reading level and age are a big factor in the book selection and if one child is bored reading "baby books" or other children are frustrated because books selected are often too hard.

How many? This also depends on the kids. For our Bookclub4boys site- I highly recommend inviting only the number of kids that sit comfortably around your table. But if this is a parent/child book club or a mix of boys & girls other seating arrangements might work better. I would limit a group of 8 and 12 (including adults and children).

Organize your Club:

Will you host book club each time?
Will you give each child an opportunity to pick a book and host a book club meeting?
Plan a schedule or make a calendar. On your first book club night let parents pick a month they would be available to host. (Giving them the responsibility to pick the book, plan an activity and send out reminders.)

Set a schedule: Meeting monthly seems to gives everyone time to read the selection without too much time pressure. Some groups meet only during the school year; others meet only in the summer. Find what works best fits your group.

Talk to the parents in your book club- would they prefer to choose dates at the beginning of the club or set a recurring date, such as the first Friday of every month at 7pm.

Find a place: As a group, decide if you would rather meet at participants' homes or at a public spot, such as a bookstore, library, or park. Personally, I find in- home meetings helps eliminate distractions. I only host book clubs in public when the location fits the plot or setting in the book. KIDS love field trips!

For example if you were to read From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs.Basil E. Frankweiler a story about siblings who runaway and live in a museum- visiting a local museum and talking about the book would add to the experience.

Select the books: Think about your goal for book club.

What type of book club is this? Some book clubs like to have a focus like : Book/Movie group. This type of book club reads books that were made into movies, then on book club night they watch the movie and compare the movie to the book. (GREAT type of book club for reluctant readers!)

Or are you hoping to introduce your child to great literature?
Here is a great list of Classic Books for kids
or pass out a list of The Newbery Medal winners and have your children/parents select a book.

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

If this is a book club just for fun- let the kids pick the books. Have the host of the first meeting choose the first book, then let the kids decide on the rest. Some groups select books months ahead of time; others choose only one or two in advance so they can see what is new or interesting. ( Or what movie is coming into the theaters... our boys read Prince Caspian and then we went and saw the movie as a book club, same with the Spiderwick series!)

Prompt discussion: Encourage each child to come prepared with at least one topic for discussion or question to ask the group.

What happens when someone doesn't finish the book? Not a problem. Book clubs can be a great tool in encouraging kids to read. Listening to the discussion of others might motivate them to finish the book, or be more diligent in reading the next book. If you notice this is a pattern among all book club members (as with my son's book club)- try introducing incentive games to your book club.

( I use incentive games consistently in my book clubs to motivate them to finish their books. For example:I plan a fun activity- like a water fight- and for every right answer they earn a water balloon!)

Plan an activity: As the host it will be their responsibility to think of a game or activity that compliments the book.

Refreshments: Snacks always are enjoyed and if they can relate to the book -even better! (For an example: Click here to see The Chocolate Touch FREE Book Club Outline.)Be sure to find out in advance if there any foods that are off limits due to allergies or other sensitivities.

Keep it simple: Start with your activity- to get that burst of energy out and then thirty minutes to an hour for discussion with a snack afterwards is enough.

Stay flexible: Your group will naturally evolve as your kids grow and change. You may meet more or less frequently or choose different books to explore. Remember what your goal is and try to keep things relaxed. What matters most is making book club enjoyable and encouraging the kids keep reading!

Kids are introduced as they appear in the photographs going from left to right...

" Hockey-Sniper": is an active boy who is a very pickie reader. Normally he doesn't take the time to read for fun unless he finds a book he likes THEN he'll read the whole series in a week!

"Tubby-Bubby"- is built like a tank! He loves to be read to by his brothers. He's too young to post reviews.

"Hubinator"- is another very active boy. He tends to like adventure and mystery type books. (Lots of SPY books- Alex Ryder, etc..) He loves dragons and his all time favorite series is How to Train Your Dragon.

"H3"- is in kindergarten and just catching onto reading. Right now- he reads the books that are sent home in his backpack each night- and that is enough reading for him! He prefers to be outside chasing friends.

"Bunny-Belle" is a timid and slow reader. She doesn't often pick up thick books, she prefers to read short chapter books. (Books around 150 pages.)

Book Club 4 kids is the collective project of 4 siblings and each of their 4 kids. (16 kids total!) Our contributors range of different reading levels and interests that truly span the spectrum. ( Kids Ages 4 month, 8 months, (3) three year olds, (2) 4 year olds, (3) 6 year olds, 8 year old, 9 year old, 10 year old, 11 year old, and (2) twelve year olds.)

Some are avid and voracious readers... devouring a series of books in a single day and earning top reading awards in their schools-- to some very reluctant readers who would prefer to limit reading to cereal boxes but excel in other areas that interest them.

Reading Aloud Tips

Read books that interest you!
Your attitude while reading sets the tone for the group. If you’re bored, they’ll be bored. If you love it, they’ll connect with the book.

Get comfortable through practice!
Read your story aloud several times before the reading day to make sure you’re familiar with it. If the kids are sitting on the floor, sit in a low chair. If they are at desks or a table, stand. They will have an easier time focusing on you if you are slightly elevated.

Introduce stories in an exciting way!
Ask questions, bring a fun picture or a silly prop to get their attention.

Speak s-l-o-w-l-y and clearly.

Maintain Eye Contact- when you can.

Hold the book so everyone can see the pictures.

Adjust the tone and volume of your voice.
Use your voice as a tool to fit the dialogue and the different characters in the book.
Softer and slower speaking helps build suspense, while speaking loudly and quickly helps with action-packed portions of the book.

Be flexible!
Adapt to the reactions of the children and be prepared to cope with interruptions.
You don’t need to acknowledge every comment verbally; instead, try eye-contact, a wink, or a smile to the child who keeps commenting.

Don’t be afraid to read something a little “too-hard” for the kids’ age group. It will challenge their minds and they might surprise you!

Choose to read in an area with few distractions.
For example, do not read in front of a brightly lit window. Try to minimize noises from outside your room; shutting the door and posting a “Quiet please! Story time is in session” sign has worked well in our house.

Encourage children to read on their own!
Reading to children is even better when they are motivated to read themselves.

I am doing a book report on Franny K. Stein. It is about a girl that is not like a regular girl.She likes snakes and bolts and spiders and worms. I like this book because there is a picture on every page. She lives in a messy room. She likes it but then her mom changed it, and it was super clean after.
The moral of the story is you can be a friend and it doesn't matter if you are different.

Oh- also what is cool about the book is there is one part where you have to CUT it! You cut three sections and then you can make different funny looking bodies, changing heads and feet.

How To Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell
The main character is named Hiccup. He is the chiefs son of a viking tribe. He has a pet dragon called Toothless. He has to train Toothless to play in a competition. Hiccups challenge is to prove himself a HERO and not be exiled. My favorite part is when the two dragons fight. There is a bunch of action.
I recommend this book to boys because it has alot of action. It has alot of dragons and I like dragons.
